about

Recorded September 1995 on analog 4-track at Fort Hazel.
Previously released on Fort Hazel Smorgasbord (FHM001, 1995).
This was an experiment in "Exquisite Corpse" chance music recorded at 3 AM on a Saturday night. We used one microphone in the middle of the studio, and walked around banging on things or playing whatever. We repeated the process for all four tracks, without listening to any previous takes as cues. Some of the banging-around noises are from Tristan riding his skateboard in the kitchen, hitting chairs and such. After recording all four tracks, we mixed it on the spot, changing effects patches and levels and panning in real time. The result is this. We were surprised that the mix actually has a structure or form, including conflict, tension, climax, resolution, dénouement, the whole works. Total serendipity. Another thing we discovered was that the scariest noises come from the smallest toys.
